Fats and it’s role with Weight Loss
Fats are the richest source of energy. Out of all the macronutrients, fats contain the most calories at a whopping 9 calories per gram. There several different types of fats, some are healthy and some are not. Dietary fat is a healthy fat that helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, E, D, and K. You should try to avoid all saturated and trans fats because they can lead to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and obesity.
A new study shows that another terrible effect of trans fats is muscle loss. It interferes with the metabolism of and synthesis of protein. Unfortunately, this lead to amino acid loss which resulted in muscle tissue loss. These type of fats will hinder weight loss.
The healthy fats that you should consume come from the following foods:
- chicken
- lean beef
- tuna
- salmon
- eggs
- seeds
- nuts
- olive oil
- flaxseed oil
Essential fatty acids are fats that cannot be manufactured by the body and need to be derived from the diet. They are responsible for the formation of prostaglandins and other hormonelike substances that regulate blood pressure, fight infections, regulate growth in children, skin & hair growth, and have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Fact on Fats
- Trans Fats: Are developed when oil is hydrogenated or when foods are fried. They increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.
- Saturated Fats: Can be found in butter, lard, red meat, and whole milk. Increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and cancer.
- Unsaturated Fats: Found in plant oils. They are healthier than saturated fats.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish, hemp seed, pumpkin seed, and flax oil. It reduces inflammation and produces a wealth of health benefits.
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Found in corn oil, safflower oil, and soybean oil. This type of fat isn’t necessarily harmful, but if consumed in large quantities without the presence of Omega-3 Fatty acids, it may increase the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
- Monosaturated Fatty Acids: Found in olive oil and nuts. These fats may lower the risk of heart disease and cancer.
