What is a Calorie?

Calories are what make up the content of food. To us, a calorie is the unit that represents how much energy food contains. Fats, Carbohydrates, Protein, and Alcohol make up the value of a calorie; they are called macro-nutrients.

Hot Tip: 3500 calories equals 1 pound! To lose 1lb of fat, you must burn of an excess of 3500 calories.

Nutritional Facts Whole MilkFats have 9 calories/gram, Carbs have 4 calories/gram, Proteins have 4 calories/gram of fat, and Alcohols have 7 calories/gram.

Using that information, let’s calculate something. Let’s take 1 cup of whole mik for example. 1 cup of whole milk has 150 calories, 8 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrates, and 8 grams of protein. To arrive at the value of 150 calories, we calculate some simple math.

Total Fat 8g: 8 grams * 9 calories/gram = 72 calories from fat

Total Carbohydrate 12g: 12 grams * 4 calories/gram = 48 calories from carbohydrates

Protein  8g: 8 grams * 4 calories/gram = 32 calories from protein

72 calories from fat + 48 calories from carbs + 32 calories from protein = 152 calories = ~150 calories

Great post, easy to understand :-) Would be useful to have a calorie calculator where you can see how many calories you should be eating each day to reach weight goals

I agree with you. For the mean time, I have put a link to an accurate calorie counter in my Blogroll.
